‘Nation 25 Under Construction’
Laboratory in Lecce and Venice 20/10 - 31/10

The Nationless Pavilion starts a laboratory of contemporary art from October 20th to October 31st, in Lecce and Venice. The goal is a collective installation to be held in October 31st at S.a.L.E Docks (VE) for a visualization of Nation 25's problems and possibilities.
The laboratory is a form of work that further convergence as shared experience, instead of "a priori" methods such as expository discourses or finished works.
Three workshops are organized, held by artists, migrants and social workers, to debate and redefine some common aspects of the lives by refugees, migrants and the internally displaced.
The workshops are the result of a junction within Nation25, lettera27, Free Home University, Archivio Memorie Migranti, S.a.L.E Docks.
The laboratory will involve the cooperation of the public, starting from the materials brought to the participants and sent online to S.a.L.E. Docks during the summer months (see Open Call).
Lab 1 – artist leader: Ultra-red (Chris Jones and Elliot Perkins)
20-24 October 2015 This workshop is held in Castrì (LE) and Lecce in collaboration with Alessandra Pomarico, co-curator for Free Home University and migration sociologist.
In Lecce from October 20th to October 24th, the Nationless Pavilion will be part of the research project started by Free Home University during summertime. FHU is an artistic, pedagogical trial investigating pressing issues of the present day. It worked together with artistic group Ultra-red in July 2015. Their project involved at once beneficiaries of the protection program for asylum-seekers in Castrì (LE), health workers, artists and researchers.
The workshop aims to continue the previous work through sound walks, a protocol for shared work, conviviality, and collective activities.
Ultra-red // is an international artistic group working within sound art and politics. It uses a pedagogical approach, and focuses on listening as the main method for social investigation.
Listening, dialogue, and forethought are meant to strengthen resistance organization, and to help to build collective, equal processes.
Lab 2 – artist leader: Emilio Fantin.
Nomadism of Imagination and Nomadism of fear.
26-28 October 2015 – different locations in Venice and S.a.L.e. Docks (VE), in collaboration with AtWork lab and Lettera27.
This workshop considers nomadism on a bilateral level: nomadism of thoughts (imagination) and nomadism of bodies (migration). Internal and external images try to interact with new countries which are usually incomprehensible, hostile, and uneasy to pick one own's way through.
It is a work that starts from reality, passes thorugh dreams, and expresses its images to the outside world.
The workshop uses the format Atwork created and promoted by lettera27. AtWork is an educational format that uses the creative process to stimulate thought and critical debate. For the AtWork Lab of the Nationless Pavillon in Venice, the artist and the participants will be provided with a Moleskine notebook, as a working tool and device that receives and influences the creative process becoming itself an art work.
Emilio Fantin // He is an Italian artist whose main themes are communication, time, the connection between art and nature, and dream as non-geographical area where convergence and exchange dynamics can happen. Fantin uses workshops as research methods. He has exhibited in several national and international contexts, such as PS1, Cittadellarte (Biella), XLIX Biennale d’Arte di Venezia, Documenta13 (Kassel).
Lab 3 – leaders: Avenir Institute (Denis Maksimov)
State-after-State: Future Potentiality of Post-Nation
29-30 October 2015 – Sale Docks
Avenir Institute (www.avenirinstitute.info) will create temporary think tank, that will be analysing potentialities of the future histories of Nation25. Their workshop will be focused on questions such as politics, technological prerequisites, future infrastructures of the potential Nation25. Politics and formation of state is the question of identification: genesis of nation requires development of new markers for 'solidifying' nation for the ‘others’.
This laboratory has a philosophic and practice matrix, Denis Maksimov will conduct an investigation of migratory flows from the experiences of previous workshops and an artistic, philosophical, political, social rethinking that accompanies the issue. They will produce mental geographies and tracks that will make up the most practical places to work inside the Sale Docks through documents, objects, computer systems. His purpose is to investigate our hypothetical Nation25 as land of paradoxes, coexistence, utopias and heterotopias for a post-colonial viewing of a hybrid and inclusive territory.
Denis Maksimov // Russian political scientists, curator, and art critic from Brussels. He is co-founder of l’Avenir Institute, a think tank for interdisciplinary research within art, philosophy, science, and politics whose goal is the conception of future possibilities.

Six themes that will accompany the laboratory and the Open Call:
Why?
Which are the reasons for which people leave? Political, religious or racial discriminations in the countries of origin.
We need to talk about the fight between free ill or predestination, focusing on the status of political refugees.
The Horizon
Does the imagination of a best expectation guide the real, or take possession of it or oppose to it?
The horizon as a dreaming and desiring destination, that is something different than the country of landing and then the country of residence. Can horizons and arrivals ever coincide?
"The horizon at the end of the Earth and the sea, has been reduced to an imaginary line, endlessly reproduced on the maps. The indefinite was reduced on a human level from an operation of abstraction over-accomplished" B. Westphal.
Crossings / Drift
During the crossings, by sea and by land, you meet difficulties, food shortages, uncertainties about the means of transport. Desires are intertwined with hope, despair and sense of end. The sea, the mountains, the desert become place of birth and death, disappearance or passage. It's time of exploration, of resistance, of discovery, of pain and otherness, of other spaces, of waiting and requests. It’s the “unexpected of the journey”. It’s the gap between the departure and the place of arrival. Between the imagined future and the real one. The goal is not chosen, but reached.
The sedentary city passes to a nomadic city, delivered endlessly to drift.
The Border
The border is a place that divides, an emotional – economic - legal barrier; is a moment of human alienation.
What is the border? Is it the separation into two segments of a line originally united?
Is the border an opportunity of unification of many full zones or is an empty and cold territory to monitor and punish?
The Research of Time/ to experience the heterotopia
The journey of political refugees is a journey of waiting. Waiting as expectation, waiting as hope. It’s an expectation accompanied by the anxiety of tomorrow’s doubt and, together, by the joy of deliverance from a catastrophe, for a new release of energy. Waiting territory is an area of instability. It is not a kind of waiting of certain promises. “To wait” without knowing what or when, it becomes an act of faith or despair. Remembering Paul Virilio in “The aesthetics of disappearance”: "The journey becomes the wait of a destination that never comes. Following a place, the traveller is just following the time. So the search for a place becomes the search for time, in a system without any logistical and temporal stability”. Can we think to a law able to put end to this perpetual “En attendant Godot"? How can we conceive a life in “espaces autres”, in what Foucault called “heterotopias”?
"Abitare" (to live in, to inhabit, to reside)
From the Latin "habitare" meaning "to hold", iterative verb of "habere" meaning "to have".
To settle in a foreign territory involves the construction of a new identity, linguistic cultural integration and religious thought. How much they can or want preserve their origins and how much change is required? This change is accepted, rejected, forced? How to live this new identity? How can you develop a rhizomatic multiplicity, a "third space" (E. Soja), the space of otherness, of an identity mixed, where reality couples with the imagination and transcends the boundaries of class, race, gender?

A partire dal 20 ottobre 2015 e per un periodo di 10 giorni, il Nationless Pavilion attiva su Lecce e Venezia dei laboratori d’arte contemporanea allo scopo di dar vita, il 31 ottobre 2015, ad un’installazione collettiva presso il S.a.L.E Docks (VE) che possa visualizzare la Nazione 25 con le sue problematiche e possibilità.
Si prevede un lavoro in progress al termine del quale emergerà la visualizzazione di una nuova Nazione con i suoi ‘perimetri', paesaggi, leggi ed etimologie.
I tre laboratori si svolgono tra Lecce e Venezia dal 20 al 31 ottobre 2015 e sono il frutto di un incontro interattivo fra Nation25, lettera27, Free Home University, AMM-Archivio Memorie Migranti, Civico Zero, S.a.L.E Docks.
Laboratorio 1 // artist leader: Ultra-red (Chris Jones e Elliot Perkins)
20-24 ottobre 2015 – Castrì (LE) e Lecce, in collaborazione con Alessandra Pomarico, co-curatrice di Free Home University e sociologa delle migrazioni.
A Lecce dal 20 al 24 ottobre il Nationless Pavilion si inserisce all’interno della ricerca avviata da Free Home University nei mesi estivi. FHU è un esperimento pedagogico e artistico nato per indagare e riflettere sulle urgenze del nostro tempo; da luglio 2015 insieme al collettivo artistico Ultra-red l’esplorazione si è concentrata sulle pratiche di solidarietà, coinvolgendo un gruppo di beneficiari del programma di protezione per i richiedenti asilo SPRAR-GUS di Castrì (LE), operatori sociali, artisti e ricercatori.
In questa sessione la ricerca viene proseguita attraverso delle passeggiate sonore e la formulazione di un “protocollo” di lavoro condiviso, momenti di convivialità e vita assieme.
Ultra-red // collettivo artistico internazionale che opera all’incrocio tra sound art e politica, utilizzando l'ascolto come metodologia di investigazione sociale. Si considerano le pratiche di ascolto, il dialogo e la riflessione come azioni in grado di rafforzare l'organizzazione della resistenza e contribuire alla costruzione di processi collettivi non autoritari, nella lotta contro il razzismo, l'omofobia, la transfobia, la povertà, per il diritto alla casa, alla sanità, all'istruzione, e per la giustizia sociale nei fenomeni migratori.
Laboratorio 2 // artist leader: Emilio Fantin
Nomadismo dell’immaginazione e nomadismo della paura
26-28 ottobre 2015 – vari luoghi a Venezia e S.a.L.e. Docks (VE), AtWork Lab, in collaborazione con lettera27
Un laboratorio che affronta il tema del nomadismo in due direzioni: nomadismo dei pensieri (immaginazione), nomadismo del corpo (migrazione), laddove l’immagine interna dialoga con quella esterna, che abita un nuovo territorio, spesso incomprensibile o ostile, nel quale cerca di orientarsi.
Un lavoro che inizia dalla realtà, percorre i sogni e restituisce all’esterno le proprie immagini.
Il laboratorio si avvale del format AtWork, creato e promosso da Fondazione lettera27. AtWork è un format educativo che usa il processo creativo per stimolare il pensiero e il dibattito critico. Per l'AtWork Lab di Nationless Pavilion a Venezia, l’artista e i partecipanti saranno dotati ciascuno di un taccuino Moleskine, uno strumento di lavoro e insieme un dispositivo che accoglie e influenza il processo creativo, fino a diventare esso stesso opera.
I taccuini realizzati saranno oggetto di dialogo e messi in mostra presso S.a.L.E Docks dal 31 ottobre fino a 20 novembre. In seguito ciascun partecipante potrà scegliere se donare il proprio taccuino a lettera27, entrando a far parte della sua collezione di taccuini d’autore, e quindi della AtWork Community online e del dibattito critico e culturale che la anima.
Emilio Fantin // artista italiano che ha rivolto la sua pratica artistica a tematiche riguardanti la comunicazione, il tempo, il rapporto tra arte e natura e il sogno come area non geografica in cui si generano dinamiche d’incontro e di scambio. Utilizza spesso la pratica laboratoriale all’interno di una ricerca che è multidisciplinare. Ha partecipato a diversi incontri e appuntamenti internazionali tra cui alcune edizioni della Biennale d’Arte di Venezia e Documenta13 (Kassel).

Denis Maksimov affronta il concetto di Stato-Nazione attraverso le contraddizioni contemporanee e passate che lo mettono in crisi. Il metodo di lavoro ‘asking and not knowing’ apre il campo ad un laboratorio che indaga le criticità senza prefiggersi risposte puntuali. Le possibilità future sono il territorio in cui far coesistere paradossi, utopie, eterotopie, scenari meticci ed inclusivi. Costruire insieme questo territorio sarà la pratica messa in atto anche durante gli altri laboratori.
Denis Maksimov // politologo, curatore e critico d’arte russo con sede a Bruxelles. E’ co-fondatore di Avenir Institute, un think tank dedicato alla ricerca transdisciplinare tra arte, filosofia, scienza, politica per tracciare e immaginare possibilità future.
Al termine dei laboratori, il 31 ottobre 2015 al S.a.L.E. Docks di Venezia è previsto l’allestimento collettivo dei lavori emersi, insieme ad una selezione di contributi visivi per un momento che traccia la geografia di Nation 25.
L’installazione sarà visitabile fino al 20 novembre 2015.

Alcuni dei temi che accompagneranno i laboratori e la Open Call:
Perché?
Quali le ragioni che spingono a partire? Discriminazioni politiche, religiose o razziali del paese di provenienza. Analisi delle motivazioni della partenza in particolare soffermandosi sulla condizione di rifugiato politico.
E’ in gioco il dibattito fra libero arbitrio o predestinazione?
L'Orizzonte
L’immaginazione di un’aspettativa migliore guida la realtà, o se ne impadronisce o le si oppone? L’orizzonte come meta sognata e desiderata, che è altro dal paese di sbarco e poi dal paese di soggiorno. Possono mai orizzonti e arrivi coincidere?
“L’orizzonte alla fine dello spazio marittimo e terrestre, è stato ridotto a una linea immaginaria che riproduciamo nelle mappe all’infinito. L’indefinito è stato ridotto a livello umano da un’operazione di astrazione finita-compiuta” B. Westphal.
Attraversamenti/ Derive
Nella tappa degli attraversamenti, via mare e via terra, si mettono in gioco: le difficoltà, le carestie alimentari, le incertezze dei mezzi di trasporto, mentre i desideri si intrecciano con le speranze, la disperazione e la fine. Il mare, le montagne, il deserto divengono luogo di nascita e morte, passaggio o sparizione. E’ il momento dell’esplorazione, della resistenza, della scoperta, di dolore e alterità, di spazi altri, di attesa, di richieste. E’ l’imprevisto del viaggio. E’ lo scarto fra la partenza e il luogo di arrivo. Tra l’immaginato e il reale. La meta non prescelta, ma raggiunta.
La città sedentaria lascia il posto alla città nomade, consegnata alla deriva senza fine.
Il Confine
La frontiera come luogo che divide, come barriera emotiva, economica, giuridica; come momento di estraniazione umana.
Che cosa rappresenta la frontiera, non è forse la separazione in due segmenti di una linea in origine unita? Frontiera come occasione di condensazione di molti pieni o territorio vuoto e freddo per sorvegliare e punire?
La Ricerca del Tempo/ Vivere l’Eterotopia
Il viaggio dei rifugiati politici è un viaggio dell’attesa. Attesa come aspettativa, attesa come speranza. Attese accompagnate dall’ansia del dubbio del domani e insieme dalla gioia dell’affrancamento da una catastrofe, per una nuova liberazione di energia. Territorio d’attesa come territorio di instabilità. E non è un tipo di attesa che preannuncia qualcosa di certo. Attendere senza sapere né cosa né quando diventa un atto di fede o di disperazione. Ricordando Paul Virilio ne L’estetica della sparizione: “Il viaggio diviene l’attesa per una meta che non arriva mai. Seguendo un luogo, il viandante sta solo seguendo il tempo. Quindi la ricerca di un luogo diventa la ricerca del tempo, in un sistema privo di qualsiasi stabilità logistica e temporale.” Possiamo pensare ad una misura legislativa che ponga fine a questo perpetuo “En attendant Godot”? Come vivere negli espaces autres, nelle eterotopie?
Abitare
Dal latino habitare, ossia "tenere", verbo iterativo di habere ovvero "avere".
Ovvero avere un abito. Lo stanziarsi in un territorio straniero comporta la costruzione di una nuova identità, un’integrazione linguistica, culturale, di pensiero e religiosa. Quanto si può o si vuole conservare delle proprie origini e quanto cambiamento è richiesto? Viene questo cambiamento accettato, rifiutato, obbligato? Come abitare questa nuova identità? Come si sviluppa una molteplicità rizomatica, un "Terzo spazio" (E. Soja), quello dell’alterità, dell’ identità meticciata, dove il reale si accoppia con l'immaginario e oltrepassa le frontiere di classe, razza, genere
